Change Youtube from Flash to HTML5

February 19th, 2012 1 comment

Referring to my last post, the current topic is FLASH and how to replace the adobe plug-in. For all geeks, there is a tutorial about the replacement of adobe’s flash player with a open-source combination of Gnash and Lightspark.

I haven’t tried it yet, but the tutorial has a gorgeous link to http://www.youtube.com/html5 where you can opt-in to view all some video in html5 format, instead of flash. You have to click on the link “Join the HTML5 Trail”, which adds an info in your youtube cookie (which is a little disadvantage, when your browser deletes all cookies after the shutdown).

Update: not all videos are available in the html5 format, but you can search for them:
“If you want to find videos with WebM formats available, you can use the Advanced Search options to look for them (or just add &webm=1 to any search URL)”
