Flash! ah-ahh!

October 31st, 2012 No comments

… no, sorry, i mean the other (evil) flash, with its browser cookies. A few days ago, I tried to enhance my privacy and ended up changing the settings for adobe flash. Especially I deselected the following:

Allow third-party flash content to store data on your computer

Sadly, after having a bit more privacy, I encountered, that some of the flash movies didn’t work anymore. So, rollback and searching a better solution.

Here it is: BetterPrivacy ! It’s a small add-on for Firefox to delete/control flash cookies and other nasty stuff. (I hope, that similar add-ons exist for Chrome or Safari, but I’m not sure.) The best thing about BetterPrivacy is that you can either choose to delete cookies, when the browser is closed, or delete them in a timed fashion, like every hour. The latter one was important for me, since I almost never close my browser.

Change Youtube from Flash to HTML5

Referring to my last post, the current topic is FLASH and how to replace the adobe plug-in. For all geeks, there is a tutorial about the replacement of adobe’s flash player with a open-source combination of Gnash and Lightspark.

I haven’t tried it yet, but the tutorial has a gorgeous link to where you can opt-in to view all some video in html5 format, instead of flash. You have to click on the link “Join the HTML5 Trail”, which adds an info in your youtube cookie (which is a little disadvantage, when your browser deletes all cookies after the shutdown).

Update: not all videos are available in the html5 format, but you can search for them:
“If you want to find videos with WebM formats available, you can use the Advanced Search options to look for them (or just add &webm=1 to any search URL)”

iPad Flash

Ich muss mal schamlos von fefe abschreiben.  Aber die Unterhaltung fürs Wochenende die er da vorschlägt ist wirklich vortrefflich. Nur damit die nicht-fefe-Leser nichts verpassen.

Flash is the single worst piece of technology on the web. Hopefully the iPad will be another nail in its coffin.
